★ Corruption

A series of military coups allowed the consolidation of corruption as an ideology.  ibid.

It was during the rule of the IBB that the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) noticed how Nigeria was becoming the major trans-shipment centre for cocaine destined for Europe, and for heroin en route to the United States.  ibid.

The unwillingness of its small band of hyper-rich to distribute its billions in any equitable manner has very serious implications and unpleasant consequences.  ibid.

Nigerians are corrupt because the system under which they live makes corruption easy and profitable ... The trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely a failure of leadership.  There is nothing basically wrong with the Nigerian character.  I am saying that Nigeria can change today if she discovers leaders who have the will, the ability, and the vision.  Chinua Achebe, writer 1983

Corruption at the heart of world football.  We reveal the three senior FIFA officials linked to an extraordinary list of secret payments worth around $100,000,000.  Panorama: Fifa’s Dirty Secrets, BBC 2010

Big brands paid millions in good faith to put the World Cup logo on their products … TV networks paid even more … So why did ISL always win the fight for the World Cup rights?  ibid.

And another World Cup in South Africa: and Jack Warner was at it again ordering $84,000’ worth of tickets from FIFA to sell to touts.  ibid.

This is the story of the leader of world football: Sepp Blatter.  And me, Andrew Jennings, an investigative journalist.  Panorama: Andrew Jennings, Fifa, Sepp Blatter & Me, BBC 2015

Sepp tried to bury the evidence.  Now the net is closing on Fifa.  ibid.

Fifa officials – they have been accused of bribery and corruption on a breathtaking scale.  ibid.

Sepp is the godfather, and silence is his code.  ibid.

The biggest scandal in world sport … Lord Coe’s presidency of world Athletics is beset by questions.  Panorama: Seb Coe and the Corruption Scandal, BBC 2016

We uncover Lord Coe’s links to the man at the centre of the corruption scandal.  ibid.

A German documentary made here in Berlin exposed state-sponsored doping of Russian athletes.  ibid.

Independent report: Corruption and Bribery at the highest level of the IAAF.  ibid.

He’s the world leader accused of personally approving murder on the streets of London.  But is the president implicated in an assassination also responsible for theft on an extraordinary scale?  Vladimir Putin has been accused of looting his own country.  Panorama: Putin’s Secret Riches, BBC 2016

Action man, man of the people, and ruler of Russia: from the Ukraine to Syria Vladimir Putin’s influence is being felt.  He’s faced countless accusations of corruption but still has record approval ratings in Russia.  But should the Russia people trust Vladimir Putin?  ibid.

So how rich is Vladimir Putin? … One journalist came up with a figure … ‘Forty billion dollars.’  ibid.

Abramovich … He provided $203,000,000 [for healthcare, re-rooted to Putin’s palace] … A gift that can be explained away: a $35 yacht [2002] … The yacht was given to an offshore company: but the real owner is Vladimir Putin.  ibid.

You can hardly blame Abramovich for wanting to keep on Putin’s good side.  ibid.

Putin controls the super-rich in Russia.  ibid.

Super-rich Russians like Roman Abramovich have become part of British life.  But the war in Ukraine has ended the UK’s love affair with wealthy Russians and their cash.  We’ve been investigating how Britain’s most famous Russian made his money.  We uncover new details about Roman Abramovich’s murky past.  And we reveal how he really made his fortune.  Panorama: Roman Abramovich’s Dirty Money, Richard Bilton reporting, BBC 2022

Roman Abramovich has pumped £1.5 billion of his own cash into Chelsea, buying success on the pitch.  He was one of the super-rich Russians who were welcomed into the UK.  (Corruption & Wealth & Rich & Football & Deal & Putin)  ibid.

1992: Russian detectives are investigating the alleged theft of a trainload of diesel.  Roman Abramovich is the main suspect … ‘Abramovich personally met the shipment and using forged documents had it rerouted to Riga where the diesel oil was sold … It would be a multi-billion-dollar rip off and would make his fortune.’  ibid.

A giant oil company called Sibneft was formed.  It was then auctioned off.  But the auction was rigged so Roman Abramovich would win.  ibid.

Most of the money borrowed by Roman Abramovich to buy the new oil company came from the Russian government.  ibid.

It was the Russian people who were ripped off by the rigged Sibneft auction.  ibid.

He sold the company back to the Russian state for a staggering $13 billion.  His corrupt Sibneft deal is where his fortune comes from.  ibid.

Mr Abramovich is thought to be Vladimir Putin’s money man.  The allegation has also been made in parliament.  ibid.

There are plenty like him who have been allowed to bring dirty money to the UK.  ibid.

‘On the one hand we want to look in the mirror and think that we’re good honest wonderful people, on the other hand we want to benefit selfishly from being dishonest.  As long as we cheat just a little bit we don’t have to pay any price in terms of the image and the way we view ourselves: we call this the Fudge Factor.’  ibid.
