★ Mormons & Latter-Day Saints (XI): Follow the Leader I

Now, it is interesting to note that in the court record Joseph Smith confessed that ‘for three years’ prior to 1826 he had used a stone placed in his hat to find treasures or lost property.  According to Joseph Smith’s own statement, then, he began his money-digging activities in about 1823.  The reader will remember that the messenger was supposed to have informed Joseph Smith of the gold plates on September 21 1823.  From this it would appear that Joseph Smith became deeply involved in money-digging at the very time the messenger told him of the gold plates and that he was still involved in these practices for at least three of the four years when God was supposed to be preparing him to receive the gold plates for the Book of Mormon.  These facts seem to undermine the whole foundation of Mormonism.  Jerald & Sandra Tanner, The Changing Face of Mormonism

On April 10, 1834, the Kirtland council dissolved the Order [consecration].  Dividing the community property was a thorny business.  Tired of quibbling and recrimination, Joseph finally resorted to a revelation to parcel out the real estate, deeding himself the temple lot, Rigdon the tannery, Cowdery the printing shop, and most of the other leaders the lots on which they were then living.  In 1835, when the time came to print this curious document in the Doctrine and Covenants, he substituted fictitious names to avoid any unpleasantness  Ahashdah for Whitney, Olilah for Cowdery, Pelagorum for Rigdon, Mahemson for Harris, and Gazelam for himself.  He even used code names for the industries  Laneshine house for the printing shop and Ozondah for the store.  Except for a few leaders who knew better, the Mormons believed these to be the names of people living in the days of Enoch.  Fawn M Browdie, No Man Knows My History p141

If the bank needed a final blow to shatter what little prestige it still held among the faithful, it received it when Warren Parrish resigned as cashier, left the church, and began openly to describe the banking methods of the prophet.  Parrish was later accused of absconding with $25,000, but if he took the sum it must have been in worthless bank notes, since that amount of specie in the vaults would have saved the bank, at least during Joseph’s term as cashier.

The toppling of the Kirtland bank loosed a hornets’ nest.  Creditors swarmed in upon Joseph armed with threats and warrants.  He was terribly in debt.  There is no way of knowing exactly how much he and his leading elders had borrowed, since the loyal Mormons left no itemized account of their own claims.  But the local non-Mormon creditors whom he could not repay brought a series of suits against the prophet which the Geauga county court duly recorded.  These records tell a story of trouble that would have demolished the prestige and broken the spirit of a lesser man.

Thirteen suits were brought against him between June 1837 and April 1839, to collect sums totaling nearly $25,000.  The damages asked amounted to almost $35,000.  He was arrested seven times in four months, and his followers managed heroically to raise the $38,428 required for bail.  Of the thirteen suits only six were settled out of court – about $12,000 out of the $25,000.  In the other seven the creditors either were awarded damages or won them by default.

Joseph had many additional debts that never resulted in court action.  Some years later he compiled a list of still outstanding Kirtland loans, which amounted to more than $33,000.  If one adds to these the two great loans of $30,000 and $60,000 borrowed in New York and Buffalo in 1836, it would seem that the Mormon leaders owed to non-Mormon individuals and firms well over $150,000.  ibid.  pp.198-202

The inhabitants of the moon are more of a uniform size than the inhabitants of the earth, being six feet in height.  They dress very much like the Quaker style and are quite general in style or fashion of dress.  They live to be very old; coming generally near a thousand years.  This is the description of them as given by Joseph the Seer.  Oliver B Huntington journal vol 2 p166

Indeed, below are the sordid details of Smith’s pathological pursuit of Mary Elizabeth Rollins – an obsessive skirt chase that began when she was a 12-year-old girl and climaxed 11 years later when he finally captured her for his unholy harem.

Smith Tells 12-Year-Old Mary Elizabeth that God Has Commanded Him in a Vision to Marry Her and that a Sword-Bearing Angel Threatened to Kill Him if She Didn’t Obey (Sound Familiar?) ...

Mary Elizabeth Rollins claimed that Joseph had a private conversation with her in 1831; she was 12 years old.

She said Joseph ‘told me about his great vision concerning me.  He said I was the first woman God commanded him to take as a plural wife’.  [letter from Mary Elizabeth Rollins Lightner to Emeline B Wells, summer 1905, LDS Archives]

Although she did not become a plural wife of Joseph’s until a number of years later, that early conversation planted a seed that Mary Elizabeth long remembered.  Steve Benson, board post 19th March 2012, ‘Sicko Pedophile Joseph Smith Pressured Girls as Young as 12 Years of Age to Marry Him With Claims of Angels of Death, Manipulation Thru Guilt Trips and Promises of Salvation’

Like Warren Jeffs, Joseph Smith engaged in sex with underage girls (despite what robo-Mos dependent on FAIR propaganda peddling may wish to believe – and as proven by Mormon history itself).

Smiths Well-Earned Reputation for Being a Sex-Obsessed, Self-Possessed Philanderer –

As a baseline (and as known in Mormon circles of his day), Smith was legendary for his sexual attraction to women.

In fact, the official LDS publication History of the Church (vol 5 p53) acknowledged the lore of Smiths attraction to females, as described in The Wasp, a LDS newspaper published in Nauvoo, Illinois:

... Smiths moves to seduce other men’s wives were so brazen and notorious that they led one distraught husband  Orson Pratt  to attempt suicide in Nauvoo on 15 July 1842 ...

Smiths first known sexual affair was with a teenager named Fanny Alger, who was living with Smith and his first wife Emma in their Kirtland Ohio home.  Fanny was also Smith’s first confirmed plural wife.  Smith came to know [her] in Kirtland during early 1833 when she, at the age of 16, stayed at his home as a housemaid.  Described as ‘a very nice and comely young woman’, according to Benjamin Johnson, Fanny lived with the Smith family from 1833 to 1836.

Fanny eventually became the target of Smiths sexual advances, with Smiths predatory behavior soon becoming the talk of the town ...

As part of Smith’s brimming quiver of teenager brides, in May 1843, in Smiths Nauvoo store, he married an underage 14-year-old female named Helen Mar Kimball.  Helen’s father, Heber C Kimball, officiated the wedding of his underage daughter to Smith.

Helen was the youngest of Smith’s brides – and according to Helen, he had sex with her.

Helen wrote about how her marriage to Smith was orchestrated by her father:

‘Having a great desire to be connected with the Prophet, Joseph, he (my father) offered me to him; this I afterwards learned from the Prophet’s own mouth.  My father had but one Ewe Lamb, but willingly laid her upon the altar: how cruel this seemed to my mother whose heartstrings were already stretched until they were ready to snap asunder, for she had already taken Sarah Noon to wife and she thought she had made sufficient sacrifice but the Lord required more.’

Smith pressured Helen to marry him, giving her only 24 hours to give him answer.  Steve Benson, board post 17th March 2012, ‘History Not Mystery: Joseph Smith Was a Pedophile (as confirmed by even Mormon sources)’

In no area were Joseph Smith’s manic qualities more evident than in his efforts to introduce and practice polygamy during the last three years of his life.  The point at which Joseph Smith began systematically to introduce polygamy to his closest associates has strong suggestions of mania ... His subsequent surge of activity with the sixteen or more women with whom he appears to have sustained sexual relations as plural wives ... is even more suggestive of the hypersexuality that often accompanies manic periods.  Dr Lawrence Foster, Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, 1993

Our intention was not only to stop free people of color from emigrating to this state, but to prevent them from being admitted as members of the church.  Missouri Evening and Mormon Star, W W Phelps editor

For many years a slave trade in Indian children, especially from the poor Shoshonean tribes, had flourished along the Spanish Trail.  Since Mormons regarded Indians as Lamanites of the Book of Mormon who were cursed with dark skin but were destined to be redeemed, they were sympathetic to their cause.  Brigham Young advised the Saints to ‘buy up the Lamanite children as fast as they could, and educate them and teach them the gospel, so that not many generations would pass ere they would become a white and delightsome people.’  On 7th March 1852, the legislative assembly of the Utah territory had passed an Act legalizing Indian slavery.  Ironically, as a result of this act, Mormons themselves indentured Indian children.

Venus, freed slave of early Mormon pioneer Elizabeth Redd, was originally given to Elizabeth as a wedding present.  She came with the Redd’s to Utah Territory in 1850.  She was a midwife and lived in Spanish Fork where she faithfully attended the LDS Church.  However, she was never allowed to attend the temple.  Kate Carter relates:

‘Some of the Spanish Fork people remember Venus as being tall, very polite and quiet and always immaculate in her dress.  She had a great desire to go to the temple, and when she found that the temple was closed to Negroes, she scratched her arm until it bled and said: ‘See, my blood is as white as anyone’s.’’ [The Negro Pioneer, p523]  Confused, board post 5th August 2009, ‘Indian and Negro Slavery in Utah – Venus’ Plight’ citing George D Smith editor An Intimate Chronicle: The Journals of William Clayton (An Intimate Chronicle; The Journals of William Clayton 1995)
