The murderer of Fenton native, Wendy (Owen) Kratzert, was sentenced on Thursday (March 9) in Brevard N C.
Thomas Harrison, 56, who pled guilty to second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, was sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison.
The victim’s husband, Edward Kratzert, 53, also formerly of Fenton, entered a plea of conspiracy to commit murder, but did not admit guilt. He was sentenced to a minimum of 11 years in prison.
Kratzert hired Harrison, his Florida neighbor, to kill Wendy in exchange for life insurance money.
Harrison's wife Luanna, 52, who was arrested in Florida in 1998 with her husband and Kratzert, received a suspended six-month sentence for her role in the murder.
Superior Court Judge Charles Lamm, as part of plea agreement, suspended her sentenced and placed her on three years’ probation.
Luanna Harrison was with her husband when he killed Wendy Kratzert. She told authorities she was inside the Kratzert’s summer home at Balsam Grove, N C and did not see the killing. But she saw the body inside the van and helped her husband dispose of it. She followed him as he drove the van up the steep mountain highway.
Her attorney, Will Cathey, said the woman lived in fear of her husband who exerted psychological control over her and at times physically abused her. T C Times online article 14th March 2000
