On the 24th of April 1964 America experienced its first credible close encounter of the third kind. Officer Lonnie Zamora was driving along a quiet stretch of road skirting the edge of the White Sands missile range in New Mexico. Suddenly he caught a glimpse of something strange in the sky. He left the road and set off for the desert following the craft. He caught sight of a shiny object now landed about two-hundred yards away. As he looked over, he saw two figures in white coveralls close to what looked like a flying saucer. Suddenly without warning the craft took off and headed straight for him. I believe Superbug could explain what Lonnie Zamora witnessed in the New Mexico desert in April 1964. His description of a silver disc-shaped object appears to fit in with the Superbug profile. ibid.

On April 24th 1964 at 5.45 p.m. Officer Lonnie Zamora of the Socorro New Mexico Police Department ... [He] saw something entirely different: a shiny metallic object that had landed to the side of the road in the desert. The indentations are not the only physical evidence the craft left behind. According to Zamora bushes were left burning and rocks smouldering. ibid.
I could see a white object sitting between those two bushes over there. It was a sort of a big egg-shape, bigger than a car. I had heard this big boom from the bottom. And fire came up. I could feel the heat off that because it was windy like now. And then it gradually pulled up twenty or thirty feet, stayed there for a while, then flew off. Lonnie Zamora
Hardly turned around from car, when heard roar (was not exactly a blast), very loud roar – at that close was real loud. Not like a jet – knows what jets sound like. Started low frequency quickly, then roar rose in frequency (higher tone) and in loudness – from loud to very loud. At same time as roar saw flame. Flame was under the object. Object was starting to go straight up – slowly up. Object slowly rose straight up. Flame was light blue and at bottom was sort of orange color. From this angle, saw the side of object (not end, as first noted). Difficult to describe flame. Thought, from roar, it might blow up. Flame might have come from underside of object, at middle, possibly a four feet area – very rough guess. Cannot describe flame further except blue and orange. No smoke, except dust in immediate area.
