A man who sued his parents for getting rid of his pornography collection has won a lawsuit in western Michigan and can seek compensation.

The US district judge Paul Maloney ruled in favour of David Werking, who said his parents had no right to throw out his collection.

He lived at their Grand Haven home for 10 months after a divorce before moving to Muncie, Indiana.

Werking said boxes of films and magazines worth an estimated $29,000 (£21,500) were missing.

There is no question that the destroyed property was David’s property, Maloney said.  ‘Defendants repeatedly admitted that they destroyed the property.

Werking’s parents said they had a right to act as his landlords.  ‘Defendants do not cite to any statute or case law to support their assertion that landlords can destroy property that they dislike, the judge said.

Maloney told both sides to file briefs on the financial value of the collection. The court does not intend to hold an evidentiary hearing, he said.  Guardian online article 19 December 2020, ‘Son wins US lawsuit after parents destroy his porn collection: David Werking can seek damages after parents got rid of films and magazines worth $29,000’

Attempts to access websites classified as pornography were made almost 700 times a day by computers inside Parliament last year, it has been reported.

Almost 250,000 attempts were made in total, according to data released by the Palace of Westminster’s IT department under Freedom of Information (FoI) laws.  Independent online article 27 July 2015, ‘Parliament computers made 250,000 attempts to ‘access pornography’ at Palace of Westminster’

Everyone knows that the Internet is changing our lives, mostly because someone in the media has uttered that exact phrase every single day since 1993.  However, it certainly appears that the main thing the Internet has accomplished is the normalization of amateur pornography.  There is no justification for the amount of naked people on the World Wide Web, many of whom are clearly (clearly!) doing so for non-monetary reasons.  Where were these people fifteen years ago?  Were there really millions of women in 1986 turning to their husbands and saying, ‘You know, I would love to have total strangers masturbate to images of me deep-throating a titanium dildo, but there’s simply no medium for that kind of entertainment.  I guess we’ll just have to sit here and watch Falcon Crest again.’  Chuck Klosterman, ‘Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto’

Long Longford: self-appointed guardian of the country’s morals.  The Lost World of the Seventies: A Report by Michael Cockerell, BBC 2012

Lord Longford – the great moral crusader of the decade.  He was a contradictory character.  An hereditary earl who identified with the outcasts of society.  He made headlines in the seventies by visiting notorious criminals in prison and for his campaign against pornography.  ibid.

When the Longford Report was published it recommended much stricter laws on pornography.  The government ignored it.  ibid.

If you dress immodestly you are magnifying this problem by becoming pornography to some of the men who see you.  Dallin H Oaks, Mormon big cheese

Pornography is the attempt to insult sex, to do dirt on it.  D H Lawrence, Phoenix, 1936

What pornography is really about, ultimately, isn’t sex but death.  Susan Sontag

I clearly remember turning to my date and saying, Porn is fun; I wish there was some place we could watch it clean and safe.  Penn & Teller: Bullshit! s6e1: The War on Porn, Showtime 2008

The war on porn and witches are bullshit.  ibid.

Tonight’s show is about freedom of the press.  Seriously.  ibid.

Porn is part of what makes us great.  ibid.

The Meese Commission was forced to conclude that porn didn’t do any lasting damage.  ibid.

Porn is fun, harmless and it helps people.  ibid.

The San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles  the acknowledged world capital of pornographic films.  It’s an industry that revolves around images of women.  My mission: to immerse myself in the less-known subculture of the male performers.  Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends s1e3: Porn, BBC 1998

‘I’ve seen a lot of guys come and go; you can do this.’  ibid.  male porn star

The world of porno performers was turning out to be kind of depressing.  Where were the parties, the glitz and the glamour?  ibid.

In the words of the business, Troy was ‘gay for pay’.  ibid.

In 1997 I made a documentary about the world of male porn performers in Los Angeles.  Finding out how difficult and stressful it can be having sex on camera for a living.  Fifteen years on I heard about big changes in the industry.  Porn was struggling.  Louis Theroux: Twilight of the Porn Stars, BBC 2012

In Los Angeles I was traversing a battleground over consent.  The vast and lucrative industry of adult film has been transformed by social media with a new generation of performers making fortunes of their own online, and using their new power to call out alleged predatory behaviour.  And the old guard is pushing back at what they see is trial by Twitter.  Louis Theroux’s Forbidden America: Porn’s Me Too, BBC 2022

She’s [Sarah Palin] got no charisma of any kind; I can imagine her being mildly useful to a low-rank porn director.  Christopher Hitchens

Men who read it [beauty pornography] dont do so because they want women who look like that.  The attraction of what they are holding is that it is not a woman, but a two-dimensional woman-shaped blank.  The appeal of the material is not the fantasy that the model will come to life; it is precisely that she will not, ever.  Her coming to life would ruin the vision.  It is not about life.  Naomi Wolf, The Beauty Myth

When [beauty pornography is] aimed at men, its effect is to keep them from finding peace in sexual love.  The fleeting chimera of the airbrushed centerfold, always receding before him, keeps the man destabilized in pursuit, unable to focus on the beauty of the woman – known, marked, lined, familiar – who hands him the paper every morning.  ibid.

A widespread taste for pornography means that nature is alerting us to some threat of extinction.  J G Ballard

At male strip shows, it is still the women that we watch, the audience of women and their eager faces.  They are more obscene than if they were dancing naked themselves.  Jean Baudrillard

There’s a subterranean impetus towards pornography so powerful that half the business world is juiced by the sort of half-sex that one finds in advertisements.  Norman Mailer

Pornography is about dominance.  Erotica is about mutuality.  Gloria Steinem

How do I know pornography depraves and corrupts?  It depraves and corrupts me.  Malcolm Muggeridge

I once stole a pornographic book that was printed in Braille.  I used to rub the dirty parts.  Bananas 1971 starring Woody Allen & Louise Lasser & Carlos Montalban & Natividad Abascal & Jacobo Morales & Miguel Angel Suarez & David Ortiz & Jack Axelrod & Howard Cossell & Roger Grimsby & Don Dunphy et al, director Woody Allen, Woody

Pornography has been so thickly glossed over with the patina of chic these days in the name of verbal freedom and sophistication ... Part of the problem is that those who traditionally have been the most vigorous opponents of porn are often those same people who shudder at the explicit mention of any sexual subject ... There can be no equality in porn, no female equivalent, no turning of the tables in the name of bawdy fun.  Pornography, like rape, is a male invention, designed to dehumanize women ... Pornography is the undiluted essence of anti-female propaganda.  Susan Brownmiller, Against Our Will, 1975
