★ Scandal

Sometimes there’s a murder or mystery or something but it’s basically always an older guy trying to deal with this younger woman and him dealing with that.  Allen v Farrow II, Richard Morgan, journalist, or unused film scripts

Both Allen’s doorman and the building manager testified in court to having seen Soon-Yi visit Allen many times during her senior year of high school and first year of college … Several months after Soon-Yi graduated high school, Mia discovered explicit photos of her in Allen’s apartment.  ibid.  caption

The private lives of Woody Allen and the Farrow family would become very public in August of 1992.  A series of investigations and law-suits followed which generated tens of thousands of court and police documents most of which were never made public.  Allen v Farrow III

‘Mr Allen’s behaviour toward Dylan was grossly inappropriate and that measures must be taken to protect her.’  ibid.  trial judge

Woody Allen denies ever having been sexually inappropriate or abusive with Dylan and was never criminally charged.  ibid.  caption

How would you know?  So I never brought them home.  Allen v Farrow IV, re further boyfriends

In 1960s and ’70s Britain hundreds of black children were caught up in an extraordinary scandal.  They were labelled as educationally subnormal by the state and wrongly sent to schools for children with low intelligence.  A decision that would have a devastating impact on their lives.  Subnormal: A British Scandal, BBC 2021

This is a story that exposed assumptions at the heart of the British schools system that has an enduring legacy today.  ibid.

But how did these ideas about race and intelligence find their way into the British schools system?  ibid.

The leaked report from the ILEA contained a multitude of damning admissions: it revealed that the education authority was well aware that Caribbean children were being wrongly placed in ESN schools at much higher rates than their white peers.  ibid.

Then a monumental scandal broke.  Journalists at the News of the World had hacked the mobile phone message box of murdered teenager Millie Dowler.  Rupert Murdoch – Battle With Britain, BBC 2013

When the Iran/Contra scandal broke sixteen months later in November 86 the big question was  What did the President know?  Was he aware that his staff were breaking the law?  Or did they have so much autonomy they could illegal sell thousands of sophisticated missiles without Reagan being aware of it?  Altered Statesmen: Ronald Reagan, 2003

Although cleared of wilful deception the report did think Reagan was forgetful and unaware.  It also described a situation in the White House of ineptitude verging on incompetence from the President down.  ibid.

She was a princess, at one time second in line to the throne.  And he was one of London’s most notorious and violent criminals.  Together they would create one of the biggest hidden scandals in royal history.  One that if fully revealed at the time could have rocked the monarchy to its foundations.  The Princess and the Gangster, 2011

This is the story of the secret relationship between the princess and the gangster.  ibid.

The dream royal marriage had been a sham for nearly a decade with Margaret and Snowdon both having affairs.  ibid.

Margaret was afforded a now unheard of level of privacy.  ibid.

Mustique had a reputation as a hedonistic paradise.  ibid.

With old-fashioned social boundaries blurring, in 1968 [John] Bindon met the aristocratic society girl and daughter of a baronet, Vicki Hodge.  ibid.

[John] Bindon never let go of his criminal career.  In 1974 Bindon was involved in a brutal street fight and was wanted by the police.  ibid.

The gangsta from Fulham made a deep impression on her.  ibid.

At the end of 1975 Bindon was invited a second time to Mustique where Margaret was to be there on holiday.  ibid.

But Bindon didn’t stop at just talking about his friendship with the princess, he made it known that he was in possession of photographs featuring him with Margaret and began to meet with journalists who were offering money for them.  ibid.

The gangsta was being monitored by Her Majesty’s security services.  And Bindon, according to one of his former associates, was told what the consequences would be if he continued to be indiscreet about the princess.  ibid.

Half dead, Bindon fled to Dublin and went into hiding.  But with the body of Darke warm on the floor the Met police were soon on the case.  ibid.

In March 1978 John Bindon pleaded not guilty to the murder of John Darke.  ibid.

From then on she faded into obscurity.  ibid.

Bindon never worked as an actor again and effectively became a recluse.  By the eighties his promiscuous sexual lifestyle had caught up with him and he was diagnosed with HIV.  He died in 1993.  ibid.

On the 30th of October 2015 a fire breaks out during a concert in the Colectiv club in Bucharest.  It instantly kills 27 youngsters and injures another 180.  Outraged by the fact that the popular club was functioning without fire exits, people take to the streets against the corrupt authorities.  Massive nationwide protests force the Social Democrat Government to resign.  To calm the people’s fury a politically independent Government of technocrats is appointed.  It receives a one-year mandate until the next general elections.  37 more burn victims die in hospitals during the four months after the Colectiv fire.  Storyville: Collective: Unravelling a Scandal, captions, BBC 2021

‘The burn patients were kept in a known septic environment, and exposed to some of the most resistant hospital bacteria in Europe.’  ibid.  journalist

Consider the so-called corporate scandals of the early 2000s.  The crimes committed by Enron included hidden partnerships, disguised debt, and the manipulation of energy markets.  Henry Blodger of Merrill Lynch and Jack Grubman of Salomon Smith Barney wrote glowing research reports of companies they knew to be junk.  Sam Waksal dumped his ImClone stock when he got early word of a damaging report from the Food and Drug Administration; his friend Martha Stewart also dumped her shares, then lied about the reason.  WorldCom and Global Crossing fabricated billions of dollars in revenue to pump up their stock prices.  One group of mutual fund companies let preferred customers trade at preferred prices, and another group was charged with hidden management fees.  Steven D Levitt & Stephen J Dubner, Freakonomics

Ghislaine Maxwell, the British socialite and one-time lover of disgraced child abuser Jeffrey Epstein is behind bars facing trial.  The charges against her  finding and grooming young girls for Epstein.  Chasing Ghislaine I: Sins of the Father, Vicky Ward, Quest Red 2022

‘She actually took part in sexually abusing the teens.’  ibid.  prosecutor

I now understand that the root to Jeffrey’s ability to cover up his crimes was his extraordinary skill at manipulation as well as the very powerful figures who surrounded him.  ibid.

Ghislaine Maxwell is the gatekeeper to a tale that’s even deeper and darker.  ibid.

Maxwell’s bullying was not confined to outsiders; he ruled his family with an iron fist as well.  ibid.

He was bankrupt.  Throughout his whole life he was condemned as a crook in one instance after another. ibid.  Tom Bower, biographer

The publishing business he built served a second purpose: access.  ibid.

Three people I interviewed say Maxwell did other types of work for Israel as well.  ibid.

Deeply weird.  This was the guy she was dating.  Why the hell would she be finding young girls for him.  Chasing Ghislaine s1e2: Power Geisha, friend

This very strange confusion as to nobody quite knowing for sure when she and Jeffrey actually met.  ibid.

Hoffenberg [Ponzi scheme] has since said that Jeffrey was the mastermind behind the crime … Hoffenberg says Jeffrey stole money from his company.  ibid.

The network of guys who lifted up Jeffrey Epstein and enabled these alleged sex crimes  that endures.  Chasing Ghislaine s1e3

Epstein didn’t just get a short sentence, his lawyers negotiated a non-prosecution agreement for him … and he was released six days a week to go to his office.  ibid.

It seems he uses these high-powered individuals to attract others.  ibid.

Gates flew on Jeffrey’s plane at least once and visited his home many times.  And there are rumours Gates’s divorce from his wife Melinda is in some part connected to these visits.  ibid.

How a future Trump Cabinet member gave a serial sex abuser the deal of a lifetime.  ibid.  The Miami Herald article Julie K Brown
