It is essential to seek out enemy agents who have come to conduct espionage against you and to bribe them to serve you.  Give them instructions and care for them.  Thus double agents are recruited and used.  Sun Tzu, The Art of War

You don’t say!  Doctor, you’re not intimating that I’m some sort of spy, are you?  Star Trek: Deep Space Nine s1e3: Past Prologue, Garak to Doctor

My character is far more disreputable.  I am a spy.  Yes, I work for one of the nation states of this era – Great Britain.  Star Trek: Deep Space Nine s4e10: Our Man Bashir, Bashir to Garak

In the aftermath of World War II ordinary German soldiers claimed they knew nothing of the holocaust.  They blamed all its atrocities on the SS.  Now, new evidence only recently discovered exposes the full extent of that lie.  The evidence comes from one of the most audacious operations ever conducted by British Intelligence.  German prisoners of war were secretly bugged and the conversations they thought private transcribed word for word.  Spying on Hitler’s Army: The Secret Recordings, Channel 4 2013

Three stately homes were converted into unlikely prison camps and wired for sound.  ibid.

Only the transcriptions remain.  ibid.

Safeblower Eddie Chapman: one of the most important double agents of the Second World War.  He was known by the nickname Agent Zigzag ... Chapman offered his services to the Germans ... He offered to work as a double agent ... Eddie Chapman was awarded the Iron Cross.  He was the only British citizen to receive one.  Wartime Secrets with Harry Harris: Outwitting Hitler

The Duchess was obtaining a variety of information concerning official activities which she was passing on to the Germans.  FBI papers released under Freedom of Information Act, cited Edward VIII: The Nazi King

We have learned in recent years to translate almost all of political life in terms of conspiracy.  And the spy novel, as never before, really, has come into its own.  John le Carré

Having watched the form of our traitors for a number of years, I cannot think that espionage can be recommended as a technique for building an impressive civilisation.  Its a louts game.  Rebecca West, The Meaning of Treason

Julius [Rosenberg] was soon asked by his Russian contact to see what he could find out about a military town being built in New Mexico ... It was to do with nuclear energy ... codenamed Manhattan.  Great Crimes & Trials s2e19: The Rosenbergs, BBC 1994

That September David Greenglass claimed to have sketched the Nagasaki bomb’s inner workings for Julius; his [Julius’] sister Ethel is said to have typed up his ten-page description.  ibid.

On the 2nd February 1950 came the arrest in Britain of a scientist Klaus Fuchs who had worked on the Manhattan Project.  The FBI had tipped off British Intelligence that a recently deciphered KGB message dated 1944 pointed to the identity of the traitor.  It seemed likely that Fuchs, a naturalised Britain born in Germany, had been betraying secrets to the Russians.  Faced with the evidence he confessed ... His treachery caused a rift between the wartime Allies.  ibid.

Like Rosenberg a dedicated communist, Fuchs had been feeding the Soviet Union with atomic research information.  ibid.

Gold was arrested and began to sing to save his neck ... By a process of elimination, the FBI identified David Greenglass.  ibid.

Julius Rosenberg was arrested on the 17th of July and Ethel on the 10th of August.  ibid.
