★ Dinosaur & Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs are the uncontested stars of paleontology.  Given their often spectacular morphology and extinction (or, rather, partial extinction – as birds are dinosaurs), when the Earth was struck by an enormous meteorite and immense volcanic eruptions shook the globe, they hog the limelight to such a degree that we often forget that before them there were other animals.  Sebastien Steyer, Earth Before the Dinosaurs

The world burned and the dinosaurs along with most species on Earth were wiped out.  Phil Plait’s Bad Universe: Death From the Skies, Discovery 2010

I came across a piece in the largest and most trusted newspaper in Papua New Guinea about a SWAT team armed with M16s and shotguns hunting down a dinosaur – Iguanodon.  Destination Truth s1e1, Skyfy 2007

Once upon a time dinosaurs ruled the world but 66 million years ago they vanished virtually overnight … Many scientists now believe it was the impact of an asteroid that caused their extinction but nobody has been able to prove it until now.  Alice Roberts & Ben Garrod, The Day the Dinosaurs Died, BBC 2017

Yucatan Peninsula, 18 miles from the coast of Mexico: This is the exact spot of a huge asteroid strike … It’s nine-miles across, the size of a city … [and] travelling at an unbelievable forty-thousand miles an hour.  ibid.

The most prized fossil in the entire museum: ‘This is Archaeopteryx.  It’s probably the most important fossil of a dinosaur that there is anywhere in the world …’  At 147 million years old this bird-like dinosaur is so highly valued because it was the first fossil to reveal that every species of bird alive today evolved from dinosaurs.  Archaeopteryx was discovered in Germany in 1861 and has been at the museum for over 150 years.  Natural History Museum: World of Wonder s1e1, Channel 5 2021

The most famous dinosaur of all time.  A possible new dino discovery.  And a dark secret about our prehistoric ancestors … The Natural History Museum’s 28 galleries are crammed full of priceless showstoppers.  Some of the biggest draws take centre stage in the spectacular main hall.  Natural History Museum: World of Wonder s1e2

The museum holds one of the greatest dinosaur collections in the world and they are looked after by a team of experts.  ibid.
