I waited two thousand years to return to Earth – it’s Miller time.  You know, Jesus, it doesn’t get better than this.  Bill Hicks, Sane Man

When Jesus comes back, these crazy, greedy, capitalistic men are gonna kill him again.  Mike Tyson

If Jesus came back today, and saw what was going on in his name, hed never stop throwing up.  Max von Sydow, Woody Allen et al

The world will go mad before Jesus comes, and you will not be able to survive in the city at that time because the demons will direct the people and the looters to your doorstep.  John Todd, How to Survive in the End Times

Q) Are you saying that you are the second coming?

David Icke: Let me explain this.  I’m not saying I’m the second coming of Christ.  Of Jesus.  Because Jesus was a separate entity.

Q) Is this reincarnation?

David Icke: Well yes.  early evening chat show

It is, therefore, not an exaggeration to say that if the city of New York were suddenly replaced by a ball of fire, some significant percentage of the American population would see a silver-lining in the subsequent mushroom cloud, as it would suggest to them that the best thing that is ever going to happen was about to happen: the return of Christ.  It should be blindingly obvious that beliefs of this sort will do little to help us create a durable future for ourselves – socially, economically, environmentally, or geo-politically ... According to the most common interpretation of biblical prophecy, Jesus will return only after things have gone horribly awry.  Imagine the consequences if any significant component of the US government actually believed that the world was about to end and that its ending would be glorious.  The fact that nearly half of the American population apparently believes this, purely on the basis of religion dogma, should be considered a moral and intellectual emergency.  Sam Harris, Letter to a Christian Nation

America is now a nation of 300 million souls ... 240 million of these souls believe that Jesus is going to return and orchestrate the end of human history with his magic powers.  Sam Harris, lecture AAI 2007

79% of Americans think that Jesus is going to come down out of the clouds and rectify all of our problems with his magic powers.  Sam Harris, lecture Aspen Ideas Festival 2007, ‘Believing the Unbelievable

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack of all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.  W B Yeats, The Second Coming

They long for nuclear war.  Because nuclear war will presage the second coming of Christ.  Professor Richard Dawkins, Freethought Radio September 2006

We are all approaching that dread tribunal.  However diversified our paths, they all converge toward that common centre.  The young, with their elastic tread, are striding to the judgment; the old, with their tottering limbs are creeping to the judgment; the rich in their splendid equipages are driving to the judgment; the poor in rags and barefooted are walking to the judgment.  The Christian making God’s statutes his song is a pilgrim to the judgment; the sinner treading upon the mercy of Jesus, and trampling upon His blood, is hastening to the judgment.  ‘We must all appear before the judgment-seat of Christ’.  Richard Fuller

Oh, on that day, that wrathful day,

When man to judgment wakes from clay.

Be Thou, O Christ, the sinner’s stay,

Though heaven and earth shall pass away.  Walter Scott, The Lay of the Last Minstrel VI:31

The idea that there would be a triumphant Messianic kingdom on Earth is in Jewish tradition.  That idea is carried forward into the Book of Revelation, when Jesus returns to Earth as a conquering warrior.  He will in fact reign over an Earthly kingdom for a thousand years.  Mortal men and women will see Jesus as the King on Earth.  Jonathan Kirsch, author A History of the End of the World

Year after year God’s kingdom failed to arrive.  Peter & Paul and the Christian Revolution I, PBS 2003

Scripture prophesised that the Roman Empire itself would be revived in a more powerful form to control all of Earth just before Christ’s second coming.  Dave Hunt, A Woman Rides the Beast, 2004

First of all, He will come to a world which is essentially one world.  His reappearance and His consequent work cannot be confined to one small locality or domain unheard of by the great majority, as was the case when He was here before.  Alice Bailey, The Reappearance of the Christ p15

The word Rapture appears nowhere in the Bible.  The concept was created around 1830 by a British preacher named John Nelson Darby.  The Secret Bible: The Apocalypse, National Geographic 2006

The Rapture is a very important feature of fundamentalist thinking.  It doesnt have anything to do with the Book of Revelation.  Professor Catherine Keller, Drew University

The Seventh Day Adventist Church believes that it was specially chosen by God to prepare the world for the Second Coming of His Son Jesus.  Luke Ford

Christian: He’s coming back for his Church.

Theroux: For Christians?

Christian: Yes, his born again believers.

Theroux: Do you think this is going to happen in your lifetime?

Christian: Yes.

Theroux: So like in the next five or ten years?

Christian: Obviously I’m anxious to quicken in the next five or ten minutes.  Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends s1e1: Born Again Christians, BBC 1998

… When their imaginary friend comes back for the Rapture: Oh I was in the bathroom and the Rapture came … Here’s a frightening statistic: one out of four Americans believe that Jesus will return to Earth in their lifetime.  See that’s religion.  Ego masquerading as humility.  Jesus is coming back: of course he’s going to want to meet me.  ‘Hi, Jesus, Bob Flemstein, big fan, I know you’re crazy busy with the Rapture and everything but can you just sign ...’  Bill Maher: But I’m Not Wrong, Sky Comedy 2021

Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. Matthew 16:28

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be?  And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.

And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
