We’re not going to give up on destroying the healthcare system for the American people. Paul Ryan, March 2013
The crisis in today’s healthcare system is deeply rooted in the interwoven history of modern medicine and corporate capitalism … Out of this history emerged a medical system that poorly serves society’s health needs. E Richard Brown, Rockefeller Medicine Men: Medicine and Capitalism in America, 1979
They [US] don’t want healthcare and they’re angry if someone offers them healthcare. Frankie Boyle’s American Autopsy, BBC 2016
The World Health Organization estimates that eleven million children die every year in the world of the Cold War victors (‘the developing world’) because of the unwillingness of the rich to help them. The catastrophe could be brought to a quick end, the WHO study concludes, because the diseases from which the children suffer and die are easily treated. Four million die from diarrhea; about two-thirds of them could be saved from the lethal dehydration ir causes by sugar and salt tablets that cost a few pennies. Noam Chomsky, Deterring Democracy p241
The US healthcare system is an international scandal; it’s roughly twice the per capita costs of comparable countries and some of the worst outcomes. Noam Chomsky, interview Democracy Now! April 2017
80% regard universal healthcare as more important than holding down taxes. Noam Chomsky, Failed States audio
Render the US [health] system the most inefficient in the industrial world with costs far higher than the average for industrial OECD societies and some of the worst health outcomes. ibid.

But at the moment I’d like to talk about another way because this threat is with us and at the moment is more imminent. One of the traditional methods of imposing statism or socialism on a people has been by way of medicine. The doctor begins to lose freedoms. It’s like telling a lie, and one leads to another. The doctor wants to practise in one town, and the government says to him, You can’t live in that town; they already have enough doctors. You have to go someplace else. All of us can see what happens once you establish the precedent … It’s very easy to disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project ... Now, the American people, if you put it to them about socialized medicine and gave them a chance to choose, would unhesitatingly vote against it. We have an example of this. Under the Truman administration it was proposed that we have a compulsory health insurance program for all people in the United States, and, of course, the American people unhesitatingly rejected this. Ronald Reagan, 1961 recording, ‘Speaks Out Against Socialised Medicine’
Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in healthcare is the most shocking and inhumane. Martin Luther King
It can be said without a doubt that the overhaul of health legislation undertaken by the European Commission and Parliament in recent years has disregarded the preference of citizens for the use of nutrients and herbs for purposes of prevention and healing. Recent directives revising the laws of medicines and introducing new rules for food supplements and herbs turned out to be strongly in favor of pharmaceutical control. As a result, many natural remedies and nutritional supplements available today may risk becoming illegal. Consumers would face additional dangers if those products were to be pushed into a black market economy. Certainly a European-level referendum or similar consultation of public sentiment would tend to balance the power of lobbies with the wishes and ideas of the people. Sepp Hasslberger, La Leva Di Archimede
The wish for healing has always been half of health. Lucius Annaeus Seneca
The assumption is that it is the inactivity that is the cause of the fatness. We’ve studied this very carefully and we cannot find that. But what we can find is the reverse: that the fatness through perhaps eating inappropriately reduces physical activity. Professor Terry Wilkin, EarlyBird Diabetes Study, Peninsula Medical School
Do you know how many steps you took today? How many calories you’ve burned? How many people you met? Or how many hours you’ve slept. If you knew these things, it might make you healthier. It might even save your life. And the ability to find them out is already at your fingertips. Horizon – Monitor Me, Dr Kevin Fong, BBC 2013

When we’re young kids we tend to be early birds; as teenagers, most of us are serious night-owls, but by our early 20s we settle into our adult patterns … It’s mostly determined by our genes. ibid.
An incredible revolution is happening in the world of healthcare that some claim could be the cure that doctors and patients desperately need: Artificial Intelligence. Horizon: Diagnosis on Demand? The Computer Will See You Now, BBC 2018
If the AI is working well, it will filter out all of the people with non-serious conditions, leaving human GPs to treat the patients who really need their expertise. ibid.
Obama-care is bad news and if I’m president of the United States I will repeal it. Mitt Romney
The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like and do what you’d rather not. Mark Twain
Leaving out the gamblers, the burglars, and the plumbers, perhaps we do put our trust in God after a fashion. But, after all, it is an overstatement.
If the cholera or black plague should come to these shores, perhaps the bulk of the nation would pray to be delivered from it, but the rest would put their trust in The Health Board. Mark Twain, Education and Citizenship speech
