★ Mormons & Latter-Day Saints (XI): Follow the Leader I

A great portion of the oriental country has been preserved from the grossest idolatry, wickedness, confusion, bloodshed, murders, cruelty, and errors in religion that have overspread the rest of the world, under the name of Christianity, or mystery of iniquity.  An open defiance of God is no mystery; open drunkenness, and revelling debauchery, and all manner of wickedness and immorality professed by sinners who profess to be nothing else, are no mystery; they do not deceive anybody; but when all manner of wickedness, idolatry, drunkenness, and corruption is cloaked under a sacred name, under an outward sanctity and holiness, and under as high and dignified an appellation as Christian, it is a mystery of iniquity; and that has overspread a great portion of the world, and has borne rule until the present day, sometimes under the name of Roman universality, sometimes under the name of the Greek Church, and at other times under various classes and names.

... If such institutions actually professed wickedness, they would go for what they were worth; but when a thing professes to be holy, and takes the name of Christ as its founder, and the holy Prophets and Apostles, to carry out all manner of oppression, all manner of idolatry and idol worship, all manner of priestcraft and kingcraft, and more or less instigating division among nations and governments, all to carry out bloodshed, cruelty, the rack, the inquisition, and holding of men in bondage, ruling them with a red of iron, it is a mystery of iniquity calculated to deceive millions.

But returning to the general corruption that has prevailed nationally, politically, and religiously, under the name of Christianity, leaving out Christ and his Apostles, I do think there has been no idolatry in the world, under any form or system, that could surpass it.  It is the mystery of iniquity, the great whore of all the earth.  It has brought the whole earth under a lasting curse, having departed from the laws of God, changed the ordinances, and broken the everlasting covenant, in consequence of which the earth is destined to be burned, and few men left.  Parley P Pratt, Journal of Discourses III:41

I tell you, Joseph holds the keys, and none of us can get into the celestial kingdom without passing by him.  We have not got rid of him, but he stands there as the sentinel, holding the keys of the kingdom of God; and there are many of them beside him.  I tell you, if we get past those who have mingled with us, and know us best, and have a right to know us best, probably we can pass all other sentinels as far as it is necessary, or as far as we may desire.  Orson Hyde, Journal of Discourses VI:154-155

Some one may say, ‘If this work of the last days be true, why did not the Saviour come himself to communicate this intelligence to the world?’  Because to the angels was committed the power of reaping the earth, and it was committed to none else.  Orson Hyde, General Conference Address, Journal of Discourses VI:335

They may break us up, and rout us from place to another, but by and by we shall come to a point where we shall have all the women, and they will have none.  You may think I am joking about this, but I can bring you the truth of God to demonstrate it to you I have not advanced anything I have not got an abundance of backing for.  There is more truth than poetry in this as sure as you live.  Orson Hyde, Journal of Discourses II:83

If you believe my testimony to the Book of Mormon; if you believe that God spake to us three witnesses by his own voice, then I tell you that in June, 1838, God spake to me again by his own voice from the heavens, and told me to ‘separate myself from among the Latter Day Saints, for as they sought to do unto me, should it be done unto them.’  David Whitmer, original witness

In the spring of 1838, the heads of the church and many of the members had gone deep into error and blindness.  I had been striving with them for a long time to show them the errors into which they were drifting, and for my labors I received only persecutions.  In June, 1838, a secret organization was formed, Dr Avard being put in as the leader of the band; a certain oath was to be administered to all the brethren to bind them to support the heads of the church in every thing they should teach.  All who refused to take this oath were considered dissenters from the church, and certain things were to be done concerning these dissenters, by Dr Avard’s secret band.  David Whitmer

Joseph Smith would put the seer stone into a hat, and put his face in the hat, drawing it closely around his face to exclude the light; and in the darkness the spiritual light would shine.  A piece of something resembling parchment would appear, and on that appeared the writing.  One character at a time would appear, and under it was the interpretation in English.  Brother Joseph would read off the English to Oliver Cowdery, who was his principal scribe, and when it was written down and repeated to Brother Joseph to see if it was correct, then it would disappear, and another character with the interpretation would appear.  Thus the Book of Mormon was translated by the gift and power of God, and not by any power of man.  David Whitmer, ‘An Address to All Believers in Christ’ p12, 1887

... and we asked Joseph how it was that he had received a revelation from the Lord for some brethren to go to Toronto and sell the copyright, and the brethren had utterly failed in their undertaking.  Joseph did not know how it was, so he inquired of the Lord about it, and behold the following revelation came through the stone: ‘Some revelations are of God, some revelations are of men, and some revelations are of the devil’.  So we see that the revelation to go to Toronto and sell the copyright was not of God, but was of the devil or of the heart of man.  ibid.

The main reason why the printing press was destroyed, was because they published the Book of Commandments.  It fell into the hands of the world, and the people of Jackson County, Missouri, saw from the revelations that they were considered by the church as intruders upon the land of Zion, as enemies to the church, and that they should be cut off out of the land of Zion and sent away.  The people seeing these things in the Book of Commandments became the more enraged, tore down the printing press, and drove the church out of Jackson County.  ibid.  p54

To todays Mormons, ‘consecration’ means giving of their money or goods to the church.  In 1838, upon the failure of their Kirtland Bank and ‘United Order’ Smith and Rigdon went to Missouri and again tried to institute an economic commune.  The Missouri Mormons, who had been expelled from Jackson County in 1834, were living in relative (albeit temporary) peace in Clay County, buying land and starting farms.  But the arrival of Smith and Rigdon in the spring of 1838 brought an influx of thousands more Mormons from Kirtland as well, spilling them over into ‘Gentile’ areas, causing new tensions.  Mormon population increased from 1,200 to 15,000 in just a few months.  Having been stung by the Kirtland failure, Smith and Rigdon implemented new policies that they hoped would make the new commune succeed.  The policy mandated that all Mormons sign their lands over to the church, and then the church would lease the land back to them as ‘stewardships’.  The Mormons who had bought and developed their lands and farms balked at the idea – among them being Cowdery, the Whitmers, Phelps, Lyman Johnson, etc.  They correctly perceived that the new ‘consecration’ policy was nothing more than Smith and Rigdon’s latest scheme to fleece the flock.  Their refusal to sign lands over to the church prompted Rigdons ‘Salt Sermon’ (which was heartily endorsed by Smith), and Rigdon’s resulting letter informing the dissenters that they must ‘depart before a more fatal calamity’ befell them.  While the dissenters had gone to procure legal aid to prevent Smith and Rigdon from taking their land (or their lives), the Danites invaded and plundered their homes and property.  So, for those Mormons, ‘consecration’ meant having their goods taken away by force, upon the order of church leaders.  David Whitmer

Brethren, I want you to understand that it is not to be as it has been heretofore.  The brother missionaries have been in the habit of picking out the prettiest women for themselves before they get here, and bringing on the ugly ones for us; hereafter you have to bring them all here before taking any of them, and let us all have a fair shake.  Heber C Kimball, The Lion of the Lord

Christians  those poor, miserable priests brother Brigham was speaking about  some of them are the biggest whoremasters there are on the earth, and at the same time preaching righteousness to the children of men.  The poor devils, they could not get up here and preach an oral discourse, to save themselves from hell; they are preaching their fathers’ sermons  preaching sermons that were written a hundred years before they were born ... You may get a Methodist priest to pour water on you, or sprinkle it on you, and baptize you face foremost, or lay you down the other way, and whatever mode you please, and you will be damned with your priest.  Heber C Kimball, Journal of Discourses V:89

Do you suppose that God in person called upon Joseph Smith, our Prophet?  God called upon him; but God did not come himself and call, but he sent Peter to do it.  Do you not see?  He sent Peter and sent Moroni to Joseph, and told him that he had got the plates.  Heber C Kimball, Journal of Discourses VI:29

I have noticed that a man who has but one wife, and is inclined to that doctrine, soon begins to wither and dry up, while a man who goes into plurality [of wives] looks fresh, young, and sprightly.  Heber C Kimball, Journal of Discourses V:22

In the spirit ... world we will go to brother Joseph ... He will say to us, ‘Come along, my boys, we will give you a good suit of clothes.  Where are your wives[?]’  [Answering Joseph]  ‘They are back yonder; they would not follow us.’  ‘Never mind,’  says Joseph,  ‘here are thousands, have all you want.’  Heber C Kimball, Journal of Discourses IV:209

I say to those who are elected to go on missions, remember they are not your sheep: they belong to Him that sends you.  Then do not make a choice of any of those sheep; do not make selections before they are brought home and put into the fold.  You understand that.  Amen.  Heber C Kimball, Journal of Discourses VI:256

I think no more of taking another wife than I do of buying a cow.  Heber C Kimball, The Twenty Seventh Wife by Irving Wallace p101

It is believed in the world that our females are all common women.  Well, in one sense, they are common – that is, they are like all other women, I suppose; but they are not unclean, for we wipe all the unclean ones from our midst: we do not only wipe them from our streets, but we wipe them out of existence.  Heber C Kimball
