★ Moon & Moonlight

With the housing for the lunar module, the mother space-craft and the launch escape tower, the whole stack reached a mind-boggling three hundred and sixty-three feet end to end.  James Burke, BBC

An estimated one thousand million people watched the moon landing.  And what that landing involved still somehow staggers the imagination today.  Because it involved launching from the Earth which was spinning at a thousand miles per hour, and at the same time circling the sun at nearly seventy thousand miles per hour.  And launching from a point from Earth away from where the moon was, and then aiming at a point in space where the moon would be in three days’ time.  And then after a journey of two hundred and forty thousand miles landing within one and a half miles of the target point.  James Burke, Connections s1e9: Countdown, BBC 1978

People assumed that the nation that won the space race would win the Cold War.  We defined that as being first to the moon.  It was a time of more or less national hysteria.  Dr Howard McCurdy, Space Historian American University

If we were walking around on the surface of the moon I would say our number one concern should be solar flares.  Chris McKay, astrobiology

The Russians had been completely upstaged: they had lost the Moon race.  Asif Siddiqi, author Challenge to Apollo: The Soviet Union and the Space Race

The competition was less with the Russians than it was within their own government.  James Bamford, author Body of Secrets

As Apollo 8 hurtles at 24,000 miles per hour to the moon, the crew is given the first ever view of the whole Earth as a globe.  Back on Earth, hundreds of millions of people are peering back towards them in stunned fascination.  NASA: Triumph and Tragedy, BBC 2009

The mission of Apollo 13 to the Moon in the spring of 1970 was rushed forward to take some of the intense political pressure off the Nixon administration, in desperate trouble with its war in Vietnam and Cambodia.  Paul Foot, Moonshot Moonshine

The feeling was definitely there that, man, just through any challenge at us and we can meet it.  We can do anything.  You want us to go to Mars?  We’ll do that.  You want us to build a space-station?   We’ll do that.  You want us to build a re-useable space-shuttle?  Sure.  We can do that too.  Andrew Chaikin, author A Man on the Moon

Since Kennedy made his historic speech eight years ago nearly fifty thousand million dollars will have been spent towards landing a man on the moon.  Horizon: After Apollo, BBC 1969

Its rocks carry clues about the earliest years of its history.  The moon reveals the scars of this bombardment which must also have hit the Earth.  Horizon: Message in the Rocks, BBC 1979

If these men are right, the moon contains a new source of energy that can provide the Earth with almost unlimited power for hundreds of years to come.  ibid.

Then in 1972 after spending over $24 billion dollars on the project America abandoned the program.  No clear reason was given.  ibid.

For over twenty years [Dennis] Hope has been making one of the most improbable livings ever heard of: he sells property on the moon.  ibid.

The first return journey will cost around $100 billion.  ibid.

One country with very definite plans of its own is China.  ibid.

Today the vast majority of these ‘good will’ rocks have disappeared into the black market.  ibid.

[Harrison] Schmitt came back from the moon and analysed samples he’d collected.  He found they contained significant quantities of Helium 3.  ibid.

We may be on the brink of a land grab on an unprecedented scale.  ibid.

The moon: to get there you have to fly at twenty-five thousand miles an hour.  You have to travel a quarter of a million miles there, and a quarter of a million miles back.  And when you return to Earth your spaceship has to survive re-entry temperatures of 2,500 degrees Centigrade.  And we’ve done it.  Moon: The Horizon Guide, Brian Cox reporting, BBC 2009

I believe that the Apollo moon landings were the greatest achievement in human history.  ibid.

It wasn’t only Americans who were dying for their lunar dream; just three months later cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov crash-landed when his parachutes failed to deploy.  ibid.

From Stanley Kubrick’s dazzling cinematic masterpiece to pop music to children’s TV, space was the latest craze.  ibid.

The Eagle had limited fuel.  Eventually, they found a site but by now they had only thirty seconds to land or they would have to abort.  ibid.

With over half a billion people tuning in.  ibid.

Once we had got to the moon interest in space exploration began to fade.  But in 1970 a drama would unfold that would once again put Apollo centre stage.  All together there were seven attempts to land a man on the moon.  ibid.

One of Apollo 13’s oxygen tanks had exploded.  And the other was leaking into space.  The lunar landing was abandoned but there wasn’t enough air to get them back to Earth.  ibid.

One country with very definite plans of its own is China.  The Chinese have already successfully launched two manned space mission, and are talking about putting an astronaut on the moon by 2025.  ibid.

Florida, July 1969: the early morning calm is rocked by a massive explosion.  The blast as powerful as two hundred tons of TNT heralds the start of one of the greatest endeavours in history.  The first mission to the moon.  First on the Moon: The Untold Story aka Apollo 11: The Untold Story, Discovery 2005

The Mission Control was not as high-tech as it looked ... All the screens were linked to Mission Control’s mainframe computers.  Despite filling a whole floor of the building, compared to modern computers of today, their total processing power was minute.  ibid.

Travelling alongside Apollo 11 was a mysterious object ... If the object wasn’t part of Apollo’s rocket, it could be only one thing – a UFO.  ibid.

Despite having a clear view of the UFO the crew were wary of reporting it to mission control ... To this day whatever it was the crew saw has never been positively identified or officially acknowledged.  ibid.

Behind the scenes the development of the module had been fraught with serious accidents and breakdowns.  One such failure had almost cost Neil Armstrong his life.  In training for the flight Armstrong had practised on two bizarre prototypes that mimicked the gravity conditions of the moon.  Buzz Aldrin already had his doubts about the lunar trainer.  Despite the disaster NASA were impressed with Armstrong’s quick reactions.  ibid.

Immediately things started to go wrong.  Without communications or computer data mission control couldn’t monitor the module’s systems or control its descent ... The lunar module began to power its way down to the surface ... The tiny on-board computer had crashed.  Instead of giving them vital information it was flashing an overload warning.  On board the lunar module the astronauts were stunned.  Perhaps even more disturbingly, no-one at mission control had any idea what the alarm meant either.  ibid.

Armstrong decided to over-ride it and take manual control of the vehicle.  But by now the spaceship had veered a long way off course.  The module was lost.  And that wasn’t all.  The descent engines’ fuel-tank was running critically low.  With the module still at five hundred feet it was rushing into unknown terrain – the odds did not look good.  With the fuel running out the astronauts were faced with a dilemma.  Sixty seconds.  Thirty seconds.  Apollo eleven had landed with barely fifteen seconds of fuel to spare.  ibid.

Immediately Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin got into their bulky spacesuits.  They prepared to make history.  Now as Neil Armstrong finally prepared to set foot on the moon, the whole world anxiously waited for his first words: ‘I’m at the foot of the ladder.  It’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.’  ibid.

Nixon became so concerned about the astronauts becoming stranded his aides prepared a memorial speech to be broadcast worldwide.  This classified government document remained buried in government archives for over thirty years.  ibid.

In the cramp conditions of the module their bulky spacesuits had broken off the very circuit breaker essential for starting up the engine.  Mission control were powerless to help.  It was up to the astronauts to improvise using only the items they had on board.  To this day Aldrin treasures the everyday object that saved their lives.   Aldrin jammed his pen into the circuitry.  And with Armstrong at the controls Apollo 11 engaged the engine and hoped for the best.  Aldrin’s ingenuity had saved the pair from a lonely death.  It remained for the crew to rendezvous with the command ship orbiting far above the surface.  ibid.
