The protests were against one thing: the wildly unpopular community charge, commonly referred to as the Poll Tax, which had been brought in by then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The tax was an unmittigated failure generating astonishing opposition across the length and bredth of Great Britain. It ultimately helped end the decade-long domination by Thatcher of the British political establishment. ibid.

In 2003 Tony Blair and George Bush started to spread this freedom to Iraq. Three coaches of day trippers set off for the US military base at Fairford, Gloucester to protest against the war. On the way there [they] were pulled over for a routine traffic stop by over a hundred police in riot gear. The officers held them for two hours and searched every nook and cranny.
