★ Disappearances & Vanishings (II)

A 15-year-old autistic boy [Sebastian Rogers] disappears from his mother’s [Katie Proudfoot] house on a cold winter’s night.  Barefoot, he’s never seen again.  True Crime Recaps: Mysterously Vanished: Autistic Boy Disappears From Home, Youtube 2024

Chris Proudfoot [stepfather] has citizen sleuths buzzing.  ibid.

Imagine you’re a grieving parent who hasn’t seen their teenage daughter in 9 months.  She simply leaves one day on a bike ride and never comes home.  But then out of nowhere a friend calls: they say they saw her on TV  there’s a polaroid making the rounds, and in the photo 2 kids are tied up, gagged and visibly terrified in the back of a cargo van … What happened to Tara Calico?  True Crime Recaps: Chilling Polaroid Found After Tara Calico Goes Missing, Youtube 2025

In 2007, 3-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in Portugal.  Madaleine McCann: The Unseen Evidence, Channel 4 2024

There remains one prime suspect: convicted paedophile Christian Bruckner.  Currently in prison for rape, he is due to be released this year.  ibid.

Police had first started investigating him in 2017 after a witness identified him.  ibid.

Police were called to an address in East Germany, an abandoned box factory owned by a man living on the fringes of society, Christian Bruckner.  ibid.

A wallet containing 6 USB sticks and 2 memory cards … They found 75 toddlers’ swimsuits.  There were preschooler bikes and toys as well as three working guns with ammunition …  ibid.

2 years before Madeleine McCann disappeared, Bruckner broke into the home of a 72-year-old American woman in the same resort.  ibid.

On the night Madeleine disappeared, a call was made to Bruckner’s mobile phone at around 7:30 p.m.  That data places his phone in the area on the evening she vanished.  ibid.

But is there more evidence to come?  ibid.

This is a story about family and identity.  In 1981 a 13-year-old goes missing in Seaside, California.  A dig produces cryptic clues.  After 22 years when police narrow in on a suspect, a traffic stop changes everything.  But over time doubts about this woman’s identity emerge.  The Curious Case of the Girl Who Died Twice, narrator Beth Karas, legal expert, Discovery 2025

This woman can’t be Mary Louis Day because Mary Louise Day is dead.  ibid.  rozzer

Charlotte’s [mom] behaviour raises some question.  She does seem to be dealing with some demons of her own.  ibid.  narrator

They never did report her missing.  ibid.  rozzer

We did not have a body.  That was significant.  ibid.

And now we have this woman who shows up.  And I said, this case can’t get any stranger.  ibid.

I really did think she was crazy.  Mentally ill.  ibid.  Mary’s half-sister

She looked very haggard.  I called her Monica.  ibid.

She was a daughter of Charlotte.  We were stunned.  ibid.  rozzer

We had all this circumstantial evidence that pointed to a homicide.  And all the inconsistencies in the statements.  The near confession.  And finding the little girl’s shoe in a spot where we were looking for a little girl’s body.  ibid.

She [Charlotte] has got a history of cheating on her husband and sleeping around.  There are a lot of rumours she had more children than I knew about.  ibid.  Mary’s half-sister

Nine days after we interviewed Mary she passed away.  ibid.  cold case rozzer

I think they killed her, they buried her, they picked her up and removed her.  She’s gone.  ibid.  Mary’s half-sister

William pulled the rug out, walked out in the middle of the desert … Do we think a body was in there?  Yeah.  ibid.

Phoenix Mary: Was she a half-sister embroiled in an elaborate ruse?  ibid.  narrator

Maybe Phoenix was Mary Day all along.  ibid.
