When a star a hundred times heavier than our Sun switches off it goes with a bang.  While we see the outward explosion as a supernova, this masks the inward implosion.  The core is collapsing into the most dangerous object in the universe; the density becomes so great in the centre that Gravity sucks in Time and Space itself.  Universe: Stars

 

At the centre of a black hole is a point called the singularity.  Everything that has ever fallen into a black hole is destroyed.  Crushed into a pin-point of infinite density and infinite smallness.  Even Space and Time are squelched out of existence.  ibid.

The Big Bang singularity gave rise to the entire universe, which includes Space, Time and all the matter that fills it.  A similar type of singularity is a white hole – a theoretic object that arises in Einsteins theory of Gravity.  Its essentially a black hole in reverse.  A point of singularity where matter is ejected.  Consequently, some scientists have wondered if the universe could have been created from a white hole.  The Universe s2e2: Cosmic Holes, 2007

 

Physicists speculate that if nature uses white holes then they could have been an important element in the earliest stages in the universe.  Perhaps even in the formation of the universe itself.  ibid.

 

There are at least two types of black holes: one is called a Stellar Mass Black Hole, which is approximately three to thirty times the mass of our sun.  It’s speculated that one hundred million of these exist in our Milky Way Galaxy.  And similar numbers exist in other galaxies.  The other type is a supermassive black hole, which is millions to billions of times the mass of our sun.  ibid. 

 

And if one black hole isnt violent enough, try two black holes duelling for dominance.  In the vastness of space black holes occasionally pair off.  It may appear as though they are engaged in some sort of cosmic courtship, but these unions are anything but harmonious.  When two black holes get too close they become trapped by each other’s gravity.  The two orbit around each other like whirling dervishes.  These binary black holes will eventually collide and coalesce.  ibid. 

 

When black holes collide they create wild vibrations called gravitational waves.  Which spread across the fabric of Space and Time.  ibid. 

 

But if a black hole is extremely tiny, the laws of quantum mechanics merge with the laws of General Relativity.  ibid.  

 

The black holes that radiate are called mini black holes.  Which are much smaller than their stellar mass or supermassive black hole cousins.  ibid.

 

The celebrated physicist Stephen Hawking proposed that if mini black holes exist then they must emit radiation, which has been called Hawking Radiation.  It is believed that this radiation will cause a tiny black hole to evaporate, and potentially to disappear.  Hawking gave mathematical evidence that showed that when a tiny black hole forms and then evaporates some of the information that went into the black hole never comes back out.  This startling prediction caused a fire-storm amongst physicists.  Because the laws of quantum theory insist that information can never be completely destroyed.  ibid.

 

 

A black hole is a region of space where the pull of gravity is so immense that nothing can escape it, not even light.  There are billions upon billions of these black monsters prowling the universe.  They come in two sizes: most of them are the stellar mass black holes, which are about five to about hundred times the mass of our sun.  And then there are super-massive black holes that are millions to billions of times the mass of the sun.  The Universe: Biggest Things in the Universe

But are black holes limited into outer space?  Some are now asking the question, is it possible that the forces that created black holes are here on Earth?  ibid.

 

Black holes are immense.  Normal ones have a mass of four to fifteen times the mass of our sun.  However the larger so-called supermassive black holes have an estimated mass of ten billion of our suns.  ibid.   

 

Could the Bermuda Triangle be Earths black hole?  ibid.

 

Could it be that a black hole is located on the bottom of the Atlantic and is affecting Earths magnetic field?  ibid.

 

Like the theoretical white holes in space, this area in the Triangle has been spewing new matter into Earths waters for centuries.  This raises the interesting theory that if white holes can be the birth-place in deep space, could they also be the birth-place on Earth?  ibid.   

 

 

There is more to the galactic centre than cosmic chaos.  At its heart, hidden by a shroud of dust and blinding light, lurks the most bizarre entity in the universe.  No-one knows exactly how it got there or the full extent of its gravitational power.  Unfolding Universe, 2002 

 

Einstein’s theory predicts a class of objects with such intense gravity that nothing, not even light, can escape their grasp.  He called them dark stars.  But he didn’t believe they really existed.  As it turned out his theory was right.  There is a kind of star that grows so heavy that it collapses under its own weight.  The mass of many suns is sucked down to a tiny single point.  ibid.

 

In our galaxy alone there may be millions.  ibid.

 

The supermassive black hole is three million times the weight of the sun squeezed smaller than a speck of dust.  But this tiny object is one of the most veracious predators in the universe: it eats stars.  ibid.

 

The new hybrid galaxy, half Andromeda, half Milky Way, will be more of a ball than a disc.  In its core two supermassive black holes will orbit each other in a tightening spiral until they finally merge.  As our new galaxy falls towards the Virgo super-cluster more titanic collisions are in store.  ibid.

When massive stars ten times heavier than our sun die gravity crushes them creating a huge explosion.  A supernova.  But some stars are even bigger than that.  These supermassive stars weigh one hundred times more than our sun, and have one hundred times our gravity.  When one of these stars dies it sets off the biggest explosion in the universe: a hyper-nova.  And this is the birth of a black hole.  ibid.  

 

Black holes are born from dying stars.  And most are small.  And thirty kilometres across.  But now scientists have discovered some black holes are much bigger: they’re called supermassive black holes.  They’re the same size as our entire solar system.  And one of these monsters lies at the heart of our own galaxy.  ibid.  

     

Everything in our galaxy including our own solar system orbits around a super-massive black hole.  But the milky way is not the only galaxy with a black hole at its centre.  There are supermassive black holes at the heart of most galaxies in the universe.  The Andromeda Galaxy is our closest neighbour.  It circles a super-massive black hole weighing one hundred and forty times more than our sun.  ibid.  

 

Quasars blast away huge quantities of gas from the surrounding galaxy.  The equivalent of ten Earths every minute.  Black holes suck gas in; quasars blow it out.  But eventually theres no gas left to make stars.  And the galaxy stops growing.  With no gas left to feed on, the quasar jets shrink and die.  Whats left is a super-massive black hole at the centre of the galaxy with a lot of infant stars.  Just like our Milky Way when it was young.  ibid.  

 

What lies at the heart of a black hole?  Some scientists believe we could use black holes as a portal with potential to travel across the universe.  ibid.  

 

Black holes might even be gateways to other universes.  On the other side of a black hole there could even be a big bang.  ibid.  

 

 

They all seem to orbit something at their centre ...
