There is nothing inherently sinister about Voodoo.  It is a blend of Roman Catholicism and African tradition practised mainly in Haiti and Louisiana.  Curses, Xs, effigy dolls and potions are more often a part of Obia, an underground form of sorcery that is not connected to Voodoo.  Unsolved Mysteries

In the 2002 British horror film 28 Days Later a rampant virus infects a group of people turning them into killer zombies who take over the human population.  ibid.

Voodoo culture is often portrayed negatively in the media as a force of witchcraft.  ibid.

 

According to tradition slaves who practised voodoo created zombies.  ibid.

For the rabies virus to become the zombie virus it would have to go through a series of mutations.  ibid.

 

Another key neurological symptom that zombies display is an extreme level of violence with a hunger for human flesh and brains.  ibid.  

 

To some experts hypnosis and mass mind control can also be seen to create a similar unquestioning follower which may share many of the characteristics with zombies.  ibid.

 

Former Haiti dictator Papa Doc Duvalier was said to have a private army of zombies called Tonton Macoute.  ibid.

 

Some scientists do believe the idea of a zombie-like virus is not entirely out of the question in the future.  ibid.

 

 

There’s also the tradition of voodoo, the Haitian magic arts, in New Orleans.  And because New Orleans is below sea level, when they bury people in New Orleans, its mostly above ground.  So you have this idea that the spirits are more accessible and can access you more easily because they’re not even buried.  Sam Trammell
