The most common UFO hoax is a flare tied to a helium balloon.  Unexplained Mysteries

Four images of a saucer-shaped object taken in 1965 by Rex Heflin in Santa Anna, California, and cited by many as a hoax on the basis that Heflin could not possible have shot three Polaroids in just twenty seconds with his old 1950s camera.  UFO Files: Deep Sea UFOs, 2006

Of all the hoaxes ever filmed or video-taped none has captured the public’s imagination like the alien autopsy footage.  When it was released by a British businessman in 1995 it made front-page headlines in newspapers throughout the world.  The World’s Greatest Hoaxes

Rancher and businessman Clyde Reinke makes this accusation after living with these secrets for almost fifty years: he has inside knowledge of the Bigfoot film hoax.  In the early 70s Reinke worked for American National Enterprises or ANE, a film-distribution company in Salt Lake City.  He claims that Roger Patterson also worked for the company.  ibid.

Ever since the infamous War of The Worlds radio hoax in 1938 people have come to recognise the danger posed by such fantastic and staged events passed off as real.  But now hoaxed photos and videos supposedly showing actual monsters, sea serpents and aliens are being presented and recognised, forcing believers and sceptics alike to work overtime to separate fact from fiction.  ibid.

What you are now seeing could be the most provocative video tape ever shot of a similar creature.  It was recorded in California this year [1998].  The large scaly snake-like animal was captured by two amateur photographers: one on shore and the other on a boat ... Its our hoax: designed to show you how easy it is to create your own sea-serpent video.  ibid.

The footage [in 1936] was shot by a start-up news-reel company hoping to create a monthly series for use in movie theatres.  They needed publicity and might have been inspired by the public reaction to this incredible picture shot two years earlier in 1934.  Attributed to a respected surgeon it was considered proof for sixty years that a monster inhabited the murky waters of Loch Ness.  But in 1994 that photo was ultimately revealed as a hoax in a stunning death-bed confession by one of those responsible.  ibid.

[Charles] Dawson: the Wizards of Sussex ... In 1912 he topped the lot: Piltdown Man ... Every one of the finds had been forged.  Dr Richard Miles, Archaeology: A Secret History III: The Power of the Past, BBC 2010

On 7th December the literary world of Manhattan was astonished by the news of reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes had agreed to tell his life story to an obscure Clifford Irving, previously best known for a book named Fake.  Great Crimes and Trials: Howard Hughes Biography Hoax

His first love was aviation and breaking records.  ibid.

Hughes was called before a Congressional committee to explain why the Spruce Goose had cost US taxpayers $18,000,000 for a white elephant.  But he shrugged it off.  As he did another committee hearing the same year.  ibid.

Growing ever more eccentric, Howard Hughes believed to be the richest man in America hid his face completely when moving in and out of hotels.  The only people who ever saw it were his five Mormon bodyguards.  ibid.

The hoax had gained worldwide publicity.  ibid.

Israel July 2001: In Jerusalem a clandestine meeting is about to take place ... What appears to be an ancient stone tablet.  It has an inscription written in ancient Hebrew ... If genuine, it could be the only proof of the fabled Temple of King Solomon.  Secrets of the Bible s1e7: The Temple of Solomon Mystery, 2015

The Jehoash Tablet is a fake ... They even find half-finished antiques ... The collector is arrested.  ibid.

In 1979 to 1987 Bremen became famous over and over again: he impersonated baseball players, and played in Basketball’s All-Star game, he was even bold enough to accept an Emmy Award … He was always arrested.  ibid.

Who’s This Man?  ibid.  Time magazine

The Mets have been trying to keep the secret as well as they can but slowly the word is starting to get out.  Apparently, the Mets have signed a young ungainly, unknown pitcher who may be the best to ever play the game … He throws a pitch so fast that none of the batters in spring training have yet been able to even touch one of his pitches with a bat.  We’re told his name is Sidd Finch.  Unhittable: Sidd Finch and the Tibetan Fastball, ESPN short 2015, reporter

The Mets were dreadful.  ibid.

And here he is throwing a ball 168 miles per hour?  ibid.

There was no Sidd Finch.  ibid.  club guy

This is comedian Simon Brodkin … Simon is also the mastermind behind some of the world’s greatest stunts targeting corrupt organisations, poking fun at self-important celebrities, taking on cheating corporations.  Britain’s Greatest Hoaxer, Channel 4 2017

Britain’s Got Talent: it’s contrived, it’s manipulative … without that hype, the millions of viewers watching at home just might start to notice just how devoid of talent the acts actually are … You are looking at … aka the Rapping Rabbi.  ibid.

A national mermaid craze in the mid-1800s.  ibid.

Towards the end of 1966 the CIA intercepted a memo indicating that the Soviets were ready to put men on the moon.  Nine cosmonauts had been training for several years.  They had even landed Lunar 9 on the moon in January 1966.  Dark Side of the Moon, 2002

The huge cake represented by the space program was shared out according to classic Mafia rules: three states, California, Texas and Florida monopolised everything.  ibid.

It was Wernher von Braun who first realised the race to the moon must be entertaining.  A show.  After several meetings with Walt Disney an idea took shape.  Only Hollywood, the dream factory itself, could transform a dull rocket launch that no-one took any notice of into a mega-production.  And Stanley Kubrick was about to convince the last doubters.  The famous director, working closely with NASA, had started to shoot 2001: A Space Odyssey.  ibid.
